Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Seattle dog owners want to know.

Real questions, real answers — from why this matters at all, to what's actually in our cleaning products, to how the schedule works.

What does Humane Paws actually do?

Humane Paws is a premium yard health and sanitation service for Seattle dog owners. On a recurring schedule, our technicians remove all dog waste from your yard and haul it offsite for proper disposal, and (depending on your tier) apply a pet-safe sanitizing treatment designed to help break down the bacteria, parasites, and odor left behind in the soil. Premium tier adds extended sanitizing coverage and priority scheduling.

Why is dog waste in the yard a health concern?

The U.S. EPA classifies pet waste as a nonpoint source pollutant — the same category as herbicides and toxic chemicals. Beyond pollution, it harbors parasites and pathogens that can survive in soil for months: roundworm (Toxocara canis), hookworm, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and various bacteria. The CDC identifies children as the highest-risk group for zoonotic infection from contaminated soil. Our Why It Matters page covers the science in detail with full citations.

Are your products safe for my dog and my kids?

Yes. Every product on our trucks is reviewed against three criteria: safe for dogs and cats, safe for children, and safe for the Puget Sound watershed. We use plant-derived cleaners and oxygenating sanitizers. We never use bleach, chlorine, quaternary ammonium ('quats'), phenol-based disinfectants, or fragranced/dye-laden products.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on your yard size, the number of dogs, access conditions, and the service tier you choose. We don't post flat rates because they'd misprice the work for almost everyone. Your free on-site assessment includes a written, transparent quote you can review at home.

How does the membership work?

Humane Paws operates on an annual membership care plan, the same model used by professional pest control, lawn care, and home-systems services. Membership locks in your service slot, your tier, and your rate for the year — which is what lets us hold a consistent crew and schedule for your home. You can change tiers within your plan at any time. We're glad to walk through the specifics during your free assessment so you know exactly what you're enrolling in before you decide.

Which Seattle neighborhoods do you serve?

We currently serve Queen Anne, Magnolia, Ballard, Laurelhurst, Capitol Hill, Madrona, Madison Park, Wallingford, Green Lake, Phinney Ridge, Ravenna, Mount Baker, and surrounding Seattle areas. If your neighborhood isn't listed, reach out — we expand our route based on demand.

How often do you visit?

Daily and twice-weekly visits give the cleanest result, and we'd recommend either for multi-dog households or families with young children. Weekly works well for most single-dog households. Bi-weekly is the lightest cadence we'd suggest. All options are available on request.

Do I need to be home during service?

No. Most of our clients give us gate access and we work entirely outside. We make sure the gate is closed behind us before we leave.

What's the difference between Essential, Standard, and Premium?

Essential is recurring removal — the foundation. Standard adds a pet-safe sanitizing treatment designed to help reduce the parasites and bacteria that can survive in soil after waste is removed (most Seattle families settle here). Premium adds extended sanitizing coverage on high-traffic zones, priority scheduling, and a direct line to your account manager.

How is this different from a regular pooper scooper service?

Most pooper scooper services bag the visible waste and stop there. Humane Paws is built around what's actually in the soil — the parasite eggs, bacterial residue, and pathogens that survive for months after removal. We use professional-grade pet-safe sanitization, watershed-conscious disposal protocols, and treat your yard as a household health surface, not just a cosmetic one.

Is dog waste really a problem for Puget Sound?

Yes — significantly. Research from the University of Washington has linked a substantial share of harmful bacteria reaching Seattle's local waterways to dog waste, washed by stormwater into Puget Sound. With well over a hundred thousand dogs in the city, the cumulative impact is real: closed shellfish beds, lower oxygen in waters that support salmon, and algal blooms. Our disposal protocol exists specifically to interrupt that pathway.

What if my dog has a sensitivity or special condition?

Tell us during your assessment — we'll choose the gentlest formulation available and avoid any specific compound your vet has flagged. Our protocols are equipped to accommodate senior dogs, dogs on chemotherapy, and dogs with severe skin conditions. Pet safety isn't an afterthought; it's the design constraint.
